Getting your measurements right is the first step to a successful DIY blind installation.

Taking a few extra minutes now will save time, adjustments, and frustration later - and ensures your blinds fit beautifully the first time.

Before you begin measuring, we suggest reviewing the important notes below. These quick tips will help you understand what to consider before recording your final numbers. Simply click through any section to learn more.

When you're ready to measure, have the following on hand:

  • A metal tape measure for accuracy
  • Something to write with and a notepad to record sizes
  • A stable step ladder if you’re measuring taller openings

Once you're set up, you’re ready to begin.

Things to consider before starting...

How do I know if my window has enough depth for a recess fit?

For a recess (inside) fit, your window frame needs sufficient internal depth to house the blind and its brackets without obstruction. Measure the depth from the front of the frame to the glass, ensuring there are no handles, winders, or tracks in the way. If space is limited, a face fit may be the better option.

What if my opening isn’t perfectly square?

Most openings aren’t perfectly square – which is completely normal. That’s why we recommend measuring the width and height in three different places. For recess fits, use the smallest measurement to ensure the blind fits neatly within the space.

How much overlap should I allow for a face fit?

For a face (outside) fit, we recommend allowing at least 50–100mm of overlap on each side where possible. This helps improve light control, privacy, and overall coverage while creating a more balanced look.

Should I round my measurements up or down?

Always record exact measurements to the nearest millimetre and avoid rounding up or down. Providing precise numbers ensures your blind is manufactured accurately for the best possible fit.

How to Care for your Blinds

Proper care extends the life of your blinds and awnings and ensures warranty coverage.

  • Clean with mild soapy water and a soft cloth. Rinse with clean water.
  • Do not use high-pressure cleaners, harsh chemicals, or abrasives.
  • Keep channels, gearboxes, and locking rails free from dust and debris.
  • Inspect brackets and fixings every 6–12 months.
  • Retract blinds during storms or strong winds.

General Tips:

  • Do not leave products extended for long periods when not in use, for example holidays.
  • Never hang items from blinds or awnings.
  • In coastal areas, rinse with fresh water monthly to prevent salt corrosion.

Outdoor Blinds:

  • 5-year limited warranty on structure, fabric, and parts.
  • Warranty covers manufacturing defects, not damage caused by incorrect installation, misuse, or weather beyond recommended care.

Warranty Disclaimer

Outdoor blinds and folding arm awnings are designed to provide shade and comfort, but their wind resistance varies depending on size, projection, mounting height, and the environment, for example coastal, exposed, or sheltered areas.

As a general rule, larger blinds and awnings handle less wind than smaller units. The greater the fabric span or projection, the lower the safe wind tolerance.

To protect your investment and ensure warranty coverage:

  • Always retract blinds and awnings during storms, strong winds, or when away from home.
  • Products should not be left extended in wind conditions that cause visible strain, for example fabric pulling, frames flexing, or rattling.
  • Each installation is unique. It is the client’s responsibility to assess local conditions and retract products before damage can occur. MIY Outdoor accepts no responsibility for damage caused by wind exposure beyond reasonable conditions for the size and environment of the product.
